Leap Dance Festival

Leap Dance Festival is Liverpool City Region's leading dance event, showcasing the work of local artists, community groups and young people.

Following a five year hiatus Leap Dance Festival returned in 2024, refocused,

re-energised, and brought the ultimate celebration of dance to Liverpool.

Last year's festival saw 781 performers take to theatres, museums, and the streets, showcasing dance to over 37,000 people across Liverpool City Region and online.

For 2025, we will continue to:

Provide opportunities for young people
Bring community groups from across the city region together through dance
Co-commission new work from artists based in our city region
Create development opportunities for emerging artists

Congratulations to @dadafest on an incredible festival for their 40th year. We're really excited to be presenting a new film from dance artist @amy.milson as part of Leap 2025, thanks to a co-commission by DaDa and @culture_liverpool.

Unseen is a concept video exploring Amy’s experiences with Visual Impairment and Periventricular Leukomalacia, featuring three movement artists, and combines dance, music and spoken word. Unseen will be presented at the Unity Theatre on Saturday 3rd May, followed by a Q&A. A one day festival pass is available to see a series of new dance works, where movement intersects with the digital world on this date for £16.

With less than a month until Leap's Big Burlesque Cabaret, we're excited to welcome @cadburyparfait - the Classic Tease Serving British Sleaze - to our tantalising line up 🫦🫦🫦

Cadbury is a Black Queer burlesque artist, who holds the title of 3rd most influential performer in the UK (and 31st worldwide). An award-winning performer, she serves classic burlesque with a hint of British tongue-in-cheek humour.

Winner of the Berlin Burlesque Week "Most Classic" award 2019, Cadbury embodies old-school Hollywood glam and showgirl finesse. Cadbury also teaches at the Shimmy Shake School of Burlesque in Berlin, specialising in the theatricality of burlesque. She's performed across the UK, including the Mighty Hoopla and Latitude festival with the Cocoa Butter Club, Hebden Burlesque Festival, Cabaret in the Millennium Centre Wales, Edinburgh Fringe, the Black Burlesque Festival and various pride celebrations and internationally in the Czech Republic, virtually in the US, and across Germany, Belgium, Croatia, Poland, France, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden. She also received the Burlesque Hall of Fame BIPOC Scholarship in Vegas 2024.

The third and final artist completing the New Dance Works line up on Friday 9th May at @unity_theatre is
Ruvimbo Bliss Munodawafa. Ruvimbo is a passionate storyteller, a Zimbabwean Scouse woman and multidisciplinary artist with 14 years' experience working on screen and off screen as a writer, model, dancer and spoken word rapstress.

For Leap, commissioned by @culture_liverpool, Ruvimbo presents Musikana Webasa (House Girl); a performance examining the role and treatment of young female domestic workers in Zimbabwe, using contemporary dance theatre to highlight issues of disparity, depression, loneliness, abuse, the traditional gaze, aims, hope, ambitions and dreams.

This piece will be performed at Unity Theatre on 9th May as part of New Dance Works alongside two other pieces by Liverpool-based artists from the African Diaspora. Tickets on sale via the link in bio.

Premiering at Leap Dance Festival, The Untold Stories of a Carnival Queen, A Celebration of Female Identity, Community & Empowerment is a semi-biographical multidisciplinary performance by Ithalia Johnson and the Dancing Queens. Rooted in community engagement, the show explores female empowerment, resilience, and self-discovery through African dance, music, and storytelling.

Drawing from historical narratives and lived experiences of diverse Black women, the performance highlights themes of discrimination, sexual exploitation, neurodiversity, and reclaiming space. It celebrates Yoruba deities and the rich traditions of carnival as an act of resistance and joy. Supported by Arts Council England, rehearsals take place at Toxteth TV Studios.

Ithalia has collaborated with a distinguished team of artists, including movement directors, choreographers, researchers, and vocal coaches, to bring these powerful stories to life: Tamara Josephine, Professor Emily Zobel Marshall, Ophelia Omoyele Balogun, Shea Best, Whispered Tales (Esther Simpson & Steve Gibbs), Jennifer John and Rhian Kempadoo Millar.

The Queen of Hearts is a story of heartbreak, friendship, status games and silliness, fusing dance theatre, puppetry and costume art.

Follow the Queen’s subjects as they try their best to please her after no one turns up to her party. The Queen of Hearts is a fun show for the whole family reimagining what happens in Wonderland when Alice is nowhere to be seen!

We are looking for proposals for theatre and cabaret settings, outdoor work, digital performances and films, community based work or work that can be shared in cultural venues in any style of dance.

This opportunity is open to artists at all stages of their career. We are particularly interested in hearing from people of colour, LGBTQIA+ and deaf/disabled artists.
