Leap Dance Festival

Leap Dance Festival is Liverpool City Region's leading dance event, showcasing the work of local artists, community groups and young people.

Following a five year hiatus Leap Dance Festival returned in 2024, refocused,

re-energised, and brought the ultimate celebration of dance to Liverpool.

Last year's festival saw 781 performers take to theatres, museums, and the streets, showcasing dance to over 37,000 people across Liverpool City Region and online.

For 2025, we will continue to:

Provide opportunities for young people
Bring community groups from across the city region together through dance
Co-commission new work from artists based in our city region
Create development opportunities for emerging artists

Following a competitive call-out, @culture_liverpool in partnership with Leap and @dadafest has commissioned eight local artists and companies to produce new work for this year’s festival.

Leap Dance Festival Director, Paul Doyle, said: “Leap Dance Festival exists to support artists to produce exciting new work, and to provide access and opportunities for people in the Liverpool City Region to engage with dance. We’re really excited to present these new works during the festival and online, and we can’t wait to see our audiences’ reactions!”

The artists and companies we are supporting to create new work are: Grace Goulding (@onebigdance), Pei Yee Tong (@peitong77), Mary Pearson (@mpearsonater), Satya-Sara Khachik (@satyasarakhachik), Amy Milson (@amy.milson), Afro Dance Academy @afrodance.academy), Ruvimbo Bliss Munodawafa (@nyayaservices) and Sole Rebel CIC @@sole_rebel_uk).

These dance grant commissions have been made possible due to UK Shared Prosperity Read more about each new piece over on our website!

Premiering at Leap Dance Festival, The Untold Stories of a Carnival Queen, A Celebration of Female Identity, Community & Empowerment is a semi-biographical multidisciplinary performance by Ithalia Johnson and the Dancing Queens. Rooted in community engagement, the show explores female empowerment, resilience, and self-discovery through African dance, music, and storytelling.

Drawing from historical narratives and lived experiences of diverse Black women, the performance highlights themes of discrimination, sexual exploitation, neurodiversity, and reclaiming space. It celebrates Yoruba deities and the rich traditions of carnival as an act of resistance and joy. Supported by Arts Council England, rehearsals take place at Toxteth TV Studios.

Ithalia has collaborated with a distinguished team of artists, including movement directors, choreographers, researchers, and vocal coaches, to bring these powerful stories to life: Tamara Josephine, Professor Emily Zobel Marshall, Ophelia Omoyele Balogun, Shea Best, Whispered Tales (Esther Simpson & Steve Gibbs), Jennifer John and Rhian Kempadoo Millar.

Part of New Dance Work, an evening of performances created by Liverpool-based artists from the African Diaspora, taking place Friday 9th May at Unity Theatre. Tickets available now via @unity_theatre website!

Follow the Queen’s subjects as they try their best to please her after no one turns up to her party. The Queen of Hearts is a fun show for the whole family reimagining what happens in Wonderland when Alice is nowhere to be seen!

Rowena Gander @rowenagander

Rowena shared an early stage of her new work WOMAN | WOMEN as part if our triple bill in May. The work is a physical and comedic show on lesbian relationships. The performance was a co-commission between Leap and @culture_liverpool

Rowena Gander @rowenagander

Rowena shared an early stage of her new work WOMAN | WOMEN as part if our triple bill in May. The work is a physical and comedic show on lesbian relationships. The performance was a co-commission between Leap and @culture_liverpool

LEAP 2024 | Artist spotlight

Stephanie Greer

If you haven't experience Seagull Lake, created by the wonderful @stephgreeractor for Leap 2024 then you have missed out.

Made posssible through funding from @culture_liverpool this outdoor performance flips the classic ballet Swan Lake on its head and reimagines it as told by natives to our coastline and city centre, Seagulls.

The gulls scavange their way through the audience, teaching us how to keep fit, keep the streets tidy and how to have a good time.

Since Leap, Steph and the team have performed at Cunard celebrations for the maiden voyage of Queen Anne and as part of the last days of summer festival at Royal Albert Dock and the birds will be flying to Wakefield in November. Steph has also been performing as part of @birdcagestage throughout the summer.

Steph is currently touring Portugal with @tmesistheatreliverpool as part of the cast of Sealskin.

On her Leap experience, Steph said "This was my first time leading on a performance project and navigating the logistics of that was a good learning curve for me and definitely helped me feel confident enough to develop my own work in the future. Seagull Lake would not have been made if it hadn't been for the bursary for Leap..."

6 months on from Leap 2024 and Liverpool Dance Prize artist @tiegan.doyle has been super busy with graduating @lipaliverpool performing at @onedanceuk
Young Creatives showcase as part of U.Dance National Festival held here in Liverpool this summer.

Tiegan developed her performance work 'Midsommar' into a full show for Edinburgh Fringe, where her dancers won an award for best young cast and has plans to develop a section of the work for film.

Tiegan says "Thanks to Leap, we later went on to recieve the 'Keep It Fringe' funding for Edinburgh... Leap helped me to feel more confident in my ability to create..."

Tiegan is currently training with @avantgardedance as part of their AG2 company.

We look forward to watching Tiegan's career blossom and hope to welcome her back to Leap in the near future.
